Homecare

  • Dental implants are an investment in long-term health and function. Success depends not only on professional care but also on consistent and thorough home care.

  • The challenge in maintaining hygiene around ALL-on-X prostheses, especially those made of zirconia and screwed into place, lies in the limited accessibility, particularly the intaglio(tissue-facing) surface, which cannot be cleaned without removing the prostheses.

  • Only about 20 to 30% of the surface area of a full arch zirconia prosthesis is accessible for effective daily biofilm disruption.

Biofilm accumulates silently on the intaglio (tissue facing) surface, contributing to implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. 70 to 80% of the prosthesis is inaccessible to the patient performed hygiene. Strategies should include biofilm disruption and newer

approaches that do not require biofilm removal.

First Line of Defense: Daily Home Care

  • Twice-Daily Routine

    • Use a soft, sonic toothbrush on visible surfaces

    • Interdental brushes or proxy brushes for the gumline around accessible implants

    • Water flosser with antimicrobial rinse under the prosthesis (angled tip preferred)

  • Antimicrobial Mouth Rinse

    • Ozone water or molecular iodine

  • AOXcare Prebiotic Supports a healthy oral microbiome

    • Reduces acid production by altering bacterial metabolism

 Red Flags to Watch For

  • Bleeding or swollen gums

  • Bad taste or odor

  • Loosening of the prosthesis

  • Redness or pus at the implant site

  • Contact your provider immediately if you notice these

 Professional Maintenance

  • Salivary Testing - every visit with a microscope, yearly lab tests

  • In-Office Cleanings

    • Every 3 to 4 months for AOX prosthesis patients

    • More frequent if there is a history of peri-implant disease

  • Professional Tools

    • Guided biofilm therapy (GBT), air polishing, laser decontamination

    • Removal of the prosthesis periodically to clean the intaglio surface

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use floss under an AOX? (Usually not—use a water flosser)

  • Is AOXcare safe long-term? (Yes, formulated to support balance without harsh chemicals)

  • Can I sleep in my prosthesis? (Yes, AOX is fixed—but hygiene becomes even more important)
