For Patients

Dental decay, gum disease, and now infected dental implants. We need to put the pause button on this runaway train and go back to the very basics. Why am I losing my teeth? Is there anything I can do about it? And most importantly, are dental implants the long-term solution they are being held out to be?

Dental implants are a powerful solution for missing teeth, but when infection strikes, it can lead to serious complications, pain, and even implant failure. Our goal is to provide clear, expert-driven information about the symptoms, causes, prevention, and treatment of implant-related infections. Whether you are a patient or a provider, our goal is to help you take proactive steps to maintain implant health and prevent costly complications. The explosive growth around the technology and economic opportunities in tooth replacement has not been followed by the most advanced education, preventive care, maintenance, and longevity strategies.    Thomas Larkin DDS

Dental Decay, Prevention Beyond Flouride

The World Health Organization states that dental caries (tooth decay) remains the most prevalent chronic disease in both children and adults, even though it is largely preventable. What strikes me the most from their numerous press releases is the use of the word disease.....

Why Is Gum Disease So Rampant

The incidence of gum disease in adults has remained extremely high for decades. And gum disease leads to tooth loss and very expensive replacement. What incentives are in place by both insurance companies and providers tp aggressively diagnose and intervene at the most early stages of infection?....

Any Oral Infection Has Systemic Implications

In June of 2024, the American Dental Association formally recognized that dentists need additional training in the connection between oral health and overall health. The recommendation is for dentist to become trained and proficient in early diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.,

Infected Implant Symptoms

The earliest symptoms of an infected dental implant are very similar to gum disease. Bleeding, swelling and sometimes pus. Early intervention is essential to prevent a small infection from becoming an implant loss event.

Causes Of Infected Implants

The number one risk factor in the loss of a dental implant is a previous history of losing teeth from periodontitis, according to noted expert, Dr Samual Low. Early intervention is a cornerstone in preventing tooth loss and now in implant failure.

Treatment For Infected Implants

Treatment for an infected dental implant needs to be early and often. The most successful dentists that I have observed require patients to return on a 3 to 6 month interval to do a microbiological test so they can monitor any changes in the oral microbiome.

For Dentists

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Tom Larkin, Proactive Oral Wellness is a movement to bring the best methods and technologies to preventive dental care.  With an annual conference entitled Oral Systemic Mastery, It has grown to a robust following of innovators who are leading the profession with practical real-world solutions to what the proactive, wellness-based model looks like.

Salivary Diagnostics

Early detection and treatment of oral dysbiosis is a cornerstone for the prevention of tooth loss and dental implant complications. There are several technigues and approaches to these proactive measures based on clinical practicality

GBT/Air
Polishing

Small particle size air polishing is an advancement in biofilm management that should over time become a standard. To be able to disclose a patient, have the important visual educational conversation and then gently and efficiently remove all the biofilm is a true advancement.

Laser
Therapy

Laser therpay has been around for decades but as with many things the routine adaptation has been slow. Diodel laser disinfection and then the more advanced all tissue laser for deeper debridemnts are rapiodly replcaing more aggrssive surgical approached. Lasrs are efficent, and they work.

PreBiotics

Prebiotics are a new category for preventive and supportive care. First introduced to me by Emily Stein PHD at my annual conference, this novel approach of suppressing periodontal pathogens without biofilm disruption is revolutionary.

Ozone

Ozonated water is soon approaching approval as a standard for water line disinfection. A completely holistic, non chemical approach to waterline and oral disinfection. It is also a good antimicrobial for oral health support.
